South Georgia is home to massive colonies of king penguins where adult birds often leave their young behind. Crèches of chicks are formed, and there is safety in number for these youngsters. The chicks were called “oakum boys” by sailors, because their fluffy down resembled the brown fibers used as caulking on ships. Left to their own devices, oakum boys are free to explore, and they seem to exude curiosity.
